Install the host program on the computer that will receive remote connections. The connecting side (the viewer) needs only a web browser. The host program cannot be installed on phones or tablets.
Where to get it
Open Download in the top menu of your server's web page. At the top of the page, choose Windows, Linux or macOS under OS of the computer to install on, and the install steps for that OS appear.
There are two ways to install:
- Download the installer: The installer this server provides. It is the same release as the server, so this is the recommended way.
- Install with a command: Installs the latest public release from the TASTEDEV repository with one command. It may be a different release from the server. Running the same command again updates it.
If the server has no installers yet, the page says "This server has no installers yet". Until then, install with the command or let your server administrator know.
Windows
The recommended installer is Installer (MSI). There are also Setup program (setup.exe) and Run without installing (zip).
To install with a command, run this in PowerShell:
& ([scriptblock]::Create((irm https://packages.tastedev.net/install.ps1))) -Product remote
Once installed, the program is at C:\Program Files\tastedev\remote\tasteremote.exe.
Linux
The recommended installer is Ubuntu · Debian (deb). There are also Fedora · RHEL (rpm) and Run without installing (AppImage).
To install with a command, run this in a terminal. It installs into your home folder (~/.local/bin/tasteremote), so it does not need administrator rights.
curl -fsSL https://packages.tastedev.net/install.sh | sh -s -- remote --user
The Linux host works in X11 sessions and in GNOME and wlroots (sway and others) Wayland sessions. KDE on Wayland is not supported yet, so log in to an X11 session. On GNOME Wayland, the host's cursor shape is not shown yet.
macOS
Download and install Apple Silicon (dmg). Intel Macs are not supported yet.
To install with a command, run this in a terminal. It installs into your home folder (~/Applications/TASTEREMOTE.app), so it does not need administrator rights.
curl -fsSL https://packages.tastedev.net/install.sh | sh -s -- remote --user
On first run, the host window shows Permissions needed. Press Open settings next to each item, allow the two permissions below, then start TASTEREMOTE again.
- Screen Recording: Needed to show your screen to the other person (System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen Recording).
- Accessibility: Needed for the other person to control the mouse and keyboard (System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility).
A host set to start at login needs no restart: once both permissions are allowed, it starts by itself within a minute.
After installing
- Run the host: The host window shows this computer's ID and one-time password.
- Link it to your account: In My devices, press Add device to register this computer. See Account and my devices.
- Connect from anywhere: You can connect to a registered computer from anywhere.
