Inside Java shares a guide to low-cost data collection for JVM first-failure diagnosis

On 2026-10-22, the Oracle Java team’s Inside Java featured Sandra Payne’s JavaOne 2026 session. Using common Java heap memory problems as examples, it covers collecting and analyzing low-cost diagnostic data in production in advance so that the first occurrence of a failure can be investigated. Developers and operators can use it when assessing the performance cost of diagnostic collection. This is not a new JDK release or an announcement of performance improvements.

JEP 543 integrated for JDK 28: finalizing structured concurrency

Inside Java listed JEP 543 as targeted to JDK 28 on October 21; the individual OpenJDK document shows Status Integrated and Release 28. It finalizes Structured Concurrency without further changes from the JDK 27 preview, managing failure, cancellation and observability by grouping related tasks within one lifetime scope. The JEP last-updated date is October 17; this is not a new SDK release today. Services using StructuredTaskScope should review task completion and cancellation.

OpenJDK issues special security advisory on the eMudhra certificate incident

Announcement date: 2026-10-21 (date only). OpenJDK published a special advisory concerning CVE-2026-91403 (CVSS 9.1) and eight compromised intermediate CA certificates. Affected versions are 27.0.1, 25.0.5, 21.0.13, 17.0.21, 11.0.32.1, 8u504 and earlier. Standalone Java runtimes should receive vendor updates first; otherwise, review the official certificate blocklist or certificate revocation checking guidance. Distributions using OS certificates can update those certificates, but FreeBSD and Homebrew packages must be updated directly. This describes Java-specific security impact and responses to the same certificate incident addressed by the Python updates; it does not confirm distribution of a new JDK version. Additional verification: OpenJDK’s response guidance was last updated on October 24 at 19:24 UTC. Check vendor release notes for the separate fix identifiers JDK-8395690 and CVE-2026-114820, and follow guidance for the runtime’s distribution type. On Debian and Ubuntu derivatives, an existing ca-certificates-java issue can make OS certificate package updates insufficient.

Java HAT shows how code reflection connects Java code to GPU execution

An October 20 Inside Java article presents a Devoxx Belgium 2026 talk. It explains how code reflection in OpenJDK Project Babylon and the Heterogeneous Accelerator Toolkit (HAT) reflect Java compute code into an analysable model, transform it for GPUs, and execute it through OpenCL or CUDA. Examples cover matrix multiplication, tensor cores, and NVIDIA Nsight profiling. This is a research and development approach, not a stable Java GPU API release or a performance guarantee.

JEP 545 targets faster ZGC startup and warmup in JDK 28

Inside Java introduced JEP 545 on 2026-10-16 as a plan targeted to JDK 28. It aims to shorten startup and warmup by changing how ZGC acquires and prepares physical memory; this is not a stable JDK release announcement. JVM service developers can distinguish forthcoming implementation from measurements on real workloads.

Inside Java presents structured concurrency design and future lower-level API

The official session explains grouping related tasks to simplify cancellation, error handling and observability. It discusses lessons from multiple preview releases and a future lower-level API, not a stable feature launch. It offers design guidance on cancellation and task lifetimes beyond adopting virtual threads.

Java team explains confined arena pooling improvements for JDK 28

The official article describes JDK 28 work that serves small native allocations from reusable pools in Arena.ofConfined(). It aims to reduce overhead without changing existing code or its deterministic lifetime and thread confinement. This is not a JDK 28 stable launch; microbenchmarks do not establish whole-application gains.
